Shawinigan-Sud, Quebec, is a predominantly French-speaking settlement nestled in the Mauricie area. Located on the banks of the Saint-Maurice River, this Canadian community is rich in history and culture. As of 1996, Shawinigan-Sud was home to 11,804 residents.
Shawinigan-Sud was officially incorporated as a village in 1912, originally known as Almaville. It primarily developed as a residential hub for the larger city of Shawinigan. In 1961, its status was upgraded from a village to a town.
Before the municipal reorganization in Quebec in 2002, Shawinigan-Sud was a separate municipality within the Le Centre-de-la-Mauricie Regional County Municipality. However, in January 2002, it was merged into the new City of Shawinigan.
In local parlance, the older and lower section of Shawinigan-Sud, closer to the Saint-Maurice River, is referred to as Almaville en bas. The rest of the community, which is built on higher ground, is known as Almaville en haut.
Shawinigan-Sud, Quebec, is also the hometown of National Hockey League player Martin Gélinas, adding to its cultural significance.
From 1912 until 2002, Shawinigan-Sud had its own mayor, adding a unique layer to its local governance. The list of mayors who have served this community reflects its rich political history.
