Campbell's Bay, a charming municipality nestled in the Pontiac Regional County Municipality in western Quebec, Canada, is a place of rich history and vibrant community life. As of 2021, it boasts a population of 705 and serves as the county seat, housing most government offices for the county, including the Sûreté du Québec. The town is home to both French and English elementary schools, making it a diverse and inclusive community.
Located between Shawville and Fort-Coulonge, Campbell's Bay is truly in the heart of the Pontiac. It is completely enclosed by the municipality of Litchfield on all sides, except for the Ottawa River to the west, adding to its unique geographical charm.
The history of Campbell's Bay dates back to 1851 when Lieutenant Donald Campbell, a member of the Scottish Regiment, received a large tract of land along a bay of the Ottawa River. This bay, now known as Lac à Campbell, was named in his honor. Campbell settled there and operated a sawmill, marking the beginning of the town's development.
In 1888, the Campbell's Bay Post Office was established, and by 1904, the village municipality was formed when it separated from Litchfield. A significant historical event took place in 1935 when Michael Bradley was convicted for the murder of five family members and hanged in Campbell's Bay Court Yard. He was the last person to be hanged in Campbell's Bay. In 2003, the town changed its status from Village Municipality to a regular Municipality.
Campbell's Bay is known for its lively community events. FallFest at the Church of Faith, Praise, and Prayer is a popular local festival. Another notable event is Bikes in the Bay, a weekend of motorcycle events, music, food, and kids' activities. The 2009 event took place on June 12, 13, and 14. More information about this event can be found at www.bikesinthebay.com.
Campbell's Bay is well-connected by Quebec Route 148 and Quebec Route 301 (rue Leslie), which are the main roads leading into and out of the town. Front Street (rue Front) is the longest and main road within the town. While there are no railway stations or airports within or near Campbell's Bay, the nearest major airport is Ottawa International Airport, making it easily accessible for visitors.
