Smooth Rock Falls is a charming town nestled in the Cochrane District of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. As per the 2016 census, the town was home to 1,330 residents.
Smooth Rock Falls is beautifully situated on the Mattagami River and is easily accessible via Highway 11. The town is approximately 59 km (37 mi) from Cochrane and about 65 km (40 mi) from Kapuskasing. Highway 634 connects the town northward to the railway point of Fraserdale, while Highway 655 provides convenient access to Timmins, the dominant regional centre, about 102 km (63 m) south. The Ontario Northland Railway serves the town for freight service, and Ontario Northland passenger buses provide public transportation.
According to the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Smooth Rock Falls had a population of 1,200 living in 582 of its 650 total private dwellings. This represents a decrease of -9.8% from its 2016 population of 1,330. The town has experienced a steady population decline with every five-year census since 1986, with a total decrease of 45.7% between 1986 and 2021. With a land area of 199.73 km2 (77.12 sq mi), the town had a population density of 6.0/km2 (15.6/sq mi) in 2021.
