Springdale, Newfoundland Labrador, is a vibrant town nestled on the Northwestern shores of Hall's Bay, near the mouth of the Indian River. As one of the largest towns in north-central Newfoundland, Springdale is known as the "hub" of Green Bay, serving several communities in the Green Bay North and Green Bay South areas.
In 2021, Springdale, Newfoundland Labrador, had a population of 2,965, a slight increase from the 2,764 recorded in the 2006 Canada Census. The town is home to the Springdale Braves and the Springdale Bravettes hockey teams, as well as the Springdale Bluefins swim team.
Springdale offers a variety of recreational facilities, including a hockey rink, curling club, skatepark, tennis courts, a soccer pitch, and a softball field. The town also boasts a small harbour, a hospital, and a number of chain restaurants, alongside locally owned ventures such as Bojo's Restaurant. The current mayor of Springdale is Alex Goudie.
Education in Springdale is provided by two schools: Indian River Academy, serving students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, and Indian River High School, catering to students in Grades 7-12.
Springdale, Newfoundland Labrador, has a rich history dating back to its first inhabitants, the Beothuk and Mi'kmaq peoples. Evidence also suggests that the Dorset and Maritime Archaic Indians spent time in the area.
The first recorded European settler, Nicholas Peters, constructed a sawmill on Mill Island in 1877. This sawmill attracted other settlers, leading to the construction of buildings on the "mainland," in a sheltered area called Wolf Cove.
In 1897, the community officially changed its name from "Wolf Cove" to "Springdale," named after a freshwater spring that served as a water source for residents.
Springdale is home to the Mainmast Museum, which houses hundreds of artifacts from Hall's Bay's past, some dating back to the 18th century. The H.C. Grant Heritage Museum, a Municipal Heritage Building on the Canadian Register of Historic Places, tells the history of Springdale and the surrounding area.
Springdale, Newfoundland Labrador, experiences a humid continental climate, with mild to warm summers and chilly winters. Precipitation is reliable year-round but peaks in the months of August, October, and November.
In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Springdale, Newfoundland Labrador, had a population of 2,965 living in 1,285 of its 1,424 total private dwellings. With a land area of 17.46 km2 (6.74 sq mi), it had a population density of 169.8/km2 (439.8/sq mi) in 2021.
