St. Jean Baptiste, an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district, is nestled in the heart of Manitoba. It's strategically located in the Rural Municipality of Montcalm along Highway 75, just 40 km north of Emerson at the United States border, and 60 km south of Winnipeg.
The community of St. Jean Baptiste is a vibrant showcase of French-Canadian culture. The area was initially settled by Métis families from St. Norbert, Manitoba. In 1878, French-Canadian families from the United States arrived in the area and purchased land, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the community.
The community's history is as diverse as its culture. Originally known as Grosse Pointe, it was later renamed Mission de la Rivière aux Prunes. In 1872, Archbishop Taché bestowed upon it its present name, St. Jean Baptiste, and it has been known as such ever since. The post office, which opened in 1877, and a parish and Canadian National Railway point were integral to the early development of St. Jean Baptiste.
According to the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, St. Jean Baptiste is home to a population of 576, residing in 246 of its 258 total private dwellings. This represents a 2.3% increase from its 2016 population of 563. With a land area of 2.02 km2 (0.78 sq mi), St. Jean Baptiste had a population density of 285.1/km2 (738.5/sq mi) in 2021.
