Blumenort, Manitoba, a local urban district in the Canadian province, is a charming community nestled in the Rural Municipality of Hanover. Just 4.1 kilometres (2.5 miles) north of the city of Steinbach, Blumenort was established in 1874 by Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonite farmers from the Russian Empire. Today, it thrives on an economy rooted in agriculture and the service industry.
The name Blumenort is derived from the German term, meaning 'flower place'. This picturesque name perfectly encapsulates the beauty and charm of this quaint community.
Before 1870, the Blumenort area, along with south-eastern Manitoba, was primarily used by the nomadic Ojibway people for hunting, fishing, and trapping. However, after the signing of Treaty 1 in 1871, the First Nations people moved onto the Brokenhead and Rousseau River Reserves, paving the way for European settlers.
In 1873, a delegation of Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire explored North America for potential settlement areas. Four delegates recommended Manitoba, leading to the signing of a Privilegium with the Canadian government. This agreement guaranteed Mennonites religious freedom, private schooling, military exemption, and land that later became known as the East Reserve. Among the villages established in the East Reserve was Blumenort, founded in the summer of 1874 by the conservative Kleine Gemeinde church.
Blumenort's growth was gradual, with the establishment of a blacksmith shop in 1874, a cheese factory in 1892, and a milk skimming station in 1914. However, by 1910, the original street village had dispersed, with farmers moving onto their farmland and seeking new land elsewhere.
The community saw a resurgence in 1932 when local farmers decided to build a cheese factory, sparking further development. By 1940, Blumenort was home to 16 families and six businesses. The community continued to grow, with a poultry processing plant opening in 1947, a post office in 1962, and a 12-room school in 1971. Today, Blumenort is a thriving community with a population of 1,738 as of 2021.
According to the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Blumenort had a population of 1,738 living in 564 of its 578 total private dwellings. This represented a 3.8% increase from its 2016 population of 1,675. With a land area of 3.17 km2 (1.22 sq mi), Blumenort had a population density of 548.3/km2 (1,420.0/sq mi) in 2021.
Blumenort is conveniently located on Manitoba Provincial Road 311, near its intersection with Provincial Trunk Highway 12. Although PTH 12 once passed through Blumenort, it now bypasses around the east side of the community, making it easily accessible yet peaceful and serene.
